A PRACTICAL PLAN FOR ADULTS 45+

# Build a practical plan for living well

A longevity protocol is a way to organise everyday habits, not a prescription or a promise of extra years. Use this page to choose one realistic priority, understand your starting point and prepare questions for your primary care provider.

Educational guidance. Not medical advice.

## Four foundations for your weekly plan

### Food that fits your life

**Why it may matter:** An everyday eating pattern is more useful to discuss than a list of “anti-aging” ingredients.

**What to discuss or track:** Ask which food changes fit your appetite, budget, health conditions and medicines. Start with our [food guide](https://fruitfulyears.com/longevity-diet-foods-that-fight-aging/); read the limits of [Blue Zones comparisons](https://fruitfulyears.com/the-blue-zones-diet-what-do-the-worlds-longest-lived-people-actually-eat/) and [fasting after 60](https://fruitfulyears.com/intermittent-fasting-after-60-a-practical-guide-to-benefits-and-risks/) before adopting restrictions.

### Movement for everyday function

**Why it may matter:** Aerobic, strength and balance activities are established parts of public-health guidance for older adults.

**What to discuss or track:** Ask what level is appropriate for your current ability. Explore [walking](https://fruitfulyears.com/the-longevity-benefits-of-walking-how-10000-steps-a-day-can-change-your-life/), [strength after 60](https://fruitfulyears.com/strength-training-after-60-longevity/) or [Zone 2 cardio](https://fruitfulyears.com/zone-2-cardio-longevity/); a [fitness estimate](https://fruitfulyears.com/vo2-max-the-single-best-predictor-of-your-longevity/) is not a lifespan prediction.

### Sleep, recovery and connection

**Why it may matter:** Daily routines can reveal practical barriers that an ambitious plan overlooks.

**What to discuss or track:** Note what makes rest difficult and discuss persistent symptoms with your clinician. Read about [sleep](https://fruitfulyears.com/sleep-longevity-science-guide/), [mental well-being](https://fruitfulyears.com/building-a-resilient-mind-the-link-between-mental-health-and-longevity/) and [simpler mornings](https://fruitfulyears.com/how-to-build-a-morning-routine-for-longevity/).

### Measurements with a purpose

**Why it may matter:** A reading is useful when it answers a care question rather than adding another number to chase.

**What to discuss or track:** Ask what to measure, how often and what would change your care. Review the limits of [biomarker testing](https://fruitfulyears.com/advanced-biomarker-testing-what-to-track-beyond-cholesterol/), [glucose monitors](https://fruitfulyears.com/continuous-glucose-monitors-cgms-a-biohackers-guide/) and [epigenetic clocks](https://fruitfulyears.com/epigenetic-clocks-how-science-measures-aging/).

## A useful plan reduces decisions, not freedom

Your plan should fit your health history, available time and clinician’s advice. You do not need supplements, advanced testing, or an elaborate routine to start organising your questions.

- **Pick one priority.** Choose a practical issue, such as finding time for an appropriate walk.

- **Try a manageable routine for two weeks.** Assess whether it fits your week, not whether it “reversed aging.”

- **Avoid vanity metrics.** Do not restrict food, change medication or push through symptoms to improve a score.

- **Set boundaries first.** Discuss suitable intensity and reasons to stop with your clinician when health conditions or medicines affect the plan.

Consistency does not make an unsafe or ineffective intervention beneficial. Optional [heat and cold exposure](https://fruitfulyears.com/cold-plunges-and-saunas-the-science-of-hormesis-and-heat-cold-shock-proteins/) deserves its own discussion of risks, not a place on everyone’s checklist.

## Build your plan in three steps

This page explains the approach. The [browser planner](https://fruitfulyears.com/weekly-habit-planner/) is the place to make and save your plan; the [starter kit](https://fruitfulyears.com/checklist/) is its printable companion. You do not need to complete all three.

- **Choose an everyday priority.** Start with what you want to make easier or more meaningful. The [Living Well Starter Kit](https://fruitfulyears.com/checklist/) shows a complete example; its separate appointment sheet is optional.

- **Choose one repeatable habit.** Decide what is suitable and small enough to manage on an ordinary day.

- **Put it in your week.** Use the [two-week habit planner](https://fruitfulyears.com/weekly-habit-planner/) to record your cue, small action, backup and next decision. After two weeks, keep, adapt or pause based on what you learned.

**Simple planning prompt:** “My priority is ____. My next step is ____. I will ask my clinician ____. I will review how manageable it feels on ____.”

Educational guidance. Not medical advice. Do not delay care while trying a routine.

## Choose one reading path

## Evidence, context and clear limits

Recognised starting points include [Canada’s 24-Hour Movement Guidelines](https://csepguidelines.ca/), [Canada’s Food Guide](https://food-guide.canada.ca/) and the [National Institute on Aging](https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/exercise-and-physical-activity/health-benefits-exercise-and-physical-activity). These resources offer general guidance, not an individual treatment plan or an endorsement of Fruitful Years.

A biomarker change or a checklist score does not establish biological age, predict lifespan or prove that a habit extends life. Use the information to prepare questions for your primary care provider.

Educational guidance. Not medical advice. [Read the medical disclaimer](https://fruitfulyears.com/medical-disclaimer/).

Read our [authorship and review disclosures](https://fruitfulyears.com/about-us/#editorial-transparency). Layout updates do not imply new clinical review.

For the routine and connection part of your plan: [Karen Carr’s retirement interview](https://fruitfulyears.com/the-first-year-of-retirement-karen-carr-on-routine-identity-and-connection/) explores identity and daily life in retirement. [the social-connection guide](https://fruitfulyears.com/building-social-connection-after-50/) offers a separate way to choose repeatable contact. These are optional reading paths for an ordinary week, not evidence that a particular routine changes lifespan.

**Choosing an activity-related reading path?** Browse the [exercise and fitness collection](https://fruitfulyears.com/category/exercise-fitness/) before deciding what questions or practical constraints belong in your plan.
