Arranging lab tests abroad: the order, appointment and results

Before paying for a laboratory test in Mexico or Costa Rica, confirm the exact requested test, preparation instructions and who will review the results. Agree the expected report time before arranging your next consultation or flight. Ask the reviewing clinician whether the destination lab’s report and test method will meet their needs.

Start with three confirmations: the exact requested test, the laboratory's written instructions and the clinician or clinical service responsible for reviewing the report. This checklist helps coordinate an already proposed test. It does not tell you which tests you need or recommend a screening package.

Confirm the order before comparing prices

Ask your doctor (or the health professional who ordered the test) for the exact test name and purpose, any required specimen and the acceptable timing. Ask the destination lab whether it accepts that order, needs a local referral, or requires an appointment or identification. Ask how the name on your identification must match the order and report. Confirm the specific branch and collection hours.

If your doctor at home will review the results, ask whether they can use that laboratory’s report and which format they need. A similar translated name or a package label is not enough to establish that it is the same test. If wording differs, ask the clinician and laboratory to reconcile it before payment.

Request an itemized price: collection, testing, consultation if required, home collection if requested and any repeat-collection charge. Ask for a receipt showing the tests performed; it may be needed for an insurance claim. Ask whether samples are processed at that branch or sent elsewhere and whether that changes the expected reporting time. These are questions to ask, not claims about every laboratory.

Get preparation instructions for your exact test

Follow the instructions from the ordering clinician and laboratory. Tell them about medicines, vitamins and supplements. Do not stop a medicine or decide to fast because another traveler did. Some tests require preparation and others do not. If instructions conflict, ask the clinician to resolve them. Tell the laboratory if you could not follow the preparation instructions before the sample is collected. MedlinePlus explains why preparation varies by test and why medicines should not be stopped without professional direction.

Ask: When do I arrive? What may I eat or drink? Are there instructions about medicines, exercise or collection containers? Who can clarify this in my preferred language? If you have crossed time zones, ask how this affects preparation or medicine timing. Keep the written answer with the appointment confirmation.

Leave room for reporting and review

Ask for an expected reporting date and time, including weekends or holidays. Ask what happens if processing is delayed, a sample cannot be used or a repeat visit is needed. Book the review consultation with enough flexibility for those possibilities. Do not build a fixed doctor-lab-dentist itinerary before each provider confirms the sequence.

For imaging or another diagnostic procedure, obtain that service's separate instructions and reporting arrangements. This lab checklist is not preparation guidance for scans or procedures.

Agree who receives and explains the report

Request the complete report with your identifying details, collection date, units and the laboratory's own reference ranges. Ask how you and the reviewing clinician receive it securely, whether a usable PDF is available, and whether an English report or professional translation is available and charged separately. Keep the original if you obtain a translation.

MedlinePlus notes that methods, reference ranges and units may differ between labs, and that results need clinical context. Ask your clinician how to compare overseas results with earlier tests. Do not interpret a highlighted number as a diagnosis yourself.

Before testing, agree who reviews the report, who contacts you about results needing prompt attention and how quickly. Ask what to do if you do not receive the report or cannot reach the responsible service. This page and a results portal are not emergency services. If you become unwell, seek appropriate local care rather than waiting for an email response.
